This handy list of 25 best kayaking day trips in the United States has ideas for amazing places to see the natural world via paddle strokes. The trips described here include kayaking on the ocean, flatwater paddling on rivers and lakes, poking through mangrove swamps, and even kayaking in a cave.

Dosewallips Estuary Kayaking Day Trip, Washington

The Dosewallips Estuary Kayak Tour is an excellent kayaking adventure for anyone eager to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the Hood Canal region of the Olympic Peninsula in Washington state.

Hood Canal Adventures supplies the kayaks for this three-hour tour. No prior experience is necessary to participate. Christina Maloney, the owner of the company and a Marine Biologist, guides many of the tours. She employs other conservation-minded biologists and naturalists who also guide.

The tour starts along the Hood Canal’s shoreline, where dense evergreen forest extends to the water’s edge. Bald eagles live in the Douglas fir trees, and participants will see them resting on snags, surveying the water for their next meal. In addition to eagles and other seabirds, harbor seals can be seen here.

The highlight of the tour is kayaking the Dosewallips River. The river water is generally calm, and participants will enjoy views of the Olympic Mountains in the distance. The riverbanks are thick with native grasses where blue herons wade. It’s possible to encounter a herd of the area’s Roosevelt elk grazing on the banks, an incredible sight.

First-time kayakers, families with children, and anyone who enjoys wildlife and natural landscapes will enjoy this tour. It’s a fantastic adventure before or after a trip to Olympic National Park.

Lake Washington Kayaking Day Trip, Washington

Lake Washington- Photo by Sydney Brown Travels

One of the best ways to experience Lake Washington near Seattle is to launch a kayak from one of the several put-in sites around the greater Seattle area. Lake Washington is the second largest lake in Washington, making it an excellent place to kayak. Even on the busiest sunny day, there is enough room for everyone to enjoy the waters of Lake Washington without feeling overcrowded.

A favorite put-in is Seward Park in Seattle. The surrounding greenery in the area and easy launch access makes this one of the best spots within Seattle city limits to kick off a Lake Washington day trip. Many group trips and classes launch from Seward Park, as well, if you want to participate in a guided journey.

As Lake Washington is so vast, you can spend a full day kayaking around the lake and not pass by the same spot twice. On the flip side, you can also do shorter trips around the lake. However, you’ll want no less than 2 hours exploring Lake Washington to get the most out of your experience.

There are dozens of species of fish in Lake Washington including salmon, coastal cutthroat trout, and largemouth bass. You might also run into some turtles, mussels, and shorebirds during your kayaking trip.

You’ll enjoy kayaking Lake Washington if you love the PNW climate, mountain views, and lush green trees lining the water’s edge (think Douglas fir, Sitka spruce, and western red cedar). From some parts of Lake Washington, kayakers can even get views of Mount Rainier. All experience levels can enjoy kayaking on Lake Washington but be prepared to handle changing currents and possible strong winds depending on the day’s conditions.

A nearby sea kayaking tour on Puget Sound is also spectacular.

La Jolla Cove Kayaking Day Trip, California

Located on the tip of California near the border with Mexico, San Diego is an excellent place for year-round kayaking day trips. Its mild climate and plenty of sunshine make spending time outside a fun adventure, even during winter months.

There are a few kayaking spots near San Diego, including La Jolla Cove (pronounced La ho-ya). You can paddle through the clear waters, explore sea caves, and encounter marine life such as seals, sea lions, and dolphins.

A highlight of kayaking in La Jolla Cove is exploring the sea caves and arches that dot the coastline. These geological formations are fascinating to kayak through. They also provide shelter for a variety of marine species such as leopard sharks, dolphins, and sea lions.

La Jolla Kayak is one of several outfitters that offer guided tours through the La Jolla Ecological Reserve and along the La Jolla Sea Caves.

The La Jolla Ecological Reserve is characterized by rocky reefs, kelp forests, and sandy bottom habitats. The area provides critical feeding, breeding, and nursery grounds for a wide variety of marine species. For example, fish, invertebrates, and marine mammals, including dolphins are protected.

All tours of La Jolla Cove depend on the weather. While cave exploration is one of the highlights of the tour, doing so is only possible during the right conditions. Kayaking day trips are open to travelers of all ages starting from 6 years old.

Overall, there are amazing outdoor day trips near San Diego, particularly to Baja, Mexico. Furthermore, kayaking trips along the Baja peninsula are some of the best in the world.

Emerald Cove Kayaking Day Trip, Arizona

by Taryn of Chasing Trail

Emerald Cove – Photo by Chasing Trail

Arizona’s Emerald Cove, also commonly called Emerald Cave, is one of the best kayaking day trips in the country. If you time your trip right, the water in the cove appears bright green!

The kayaking trip is fairly easy. In fact, the most difficult part is getting to Emerald Cove. Despite being in Arizona, it’s actually less than one hour from Las Vegas. On the other hand, Emerald Cove is over four hours from Phoenix.

Most people book their kayaking trip through an outfitter. There are dozens, all with the same offerings, either rentals or guided tours. If you have your own inflatable kayak, you can also do a DIY excursion. Whichever approach you choose, you’ll start from Willow Beach Marina, on the Arizona side of the Colorado River.

From here, it’s a relatively easy 2-mile paddle upstream. There are several small sandy beaches along the way, so pack lunch and drinks, and stop at least once.

Emerald Cove itself is much smaller than most people expect. You’ll see people in “line” on the water outside the entrance, going inside in groups of 2-3 at a time. Go in, snap some photos, then paddle back downstream.

To get that coveted green hue, you need to be inside the cove at the right time. This is right around 2:00 pm, but can vary slightly based on the time of year. The optimal time lasts mere minutes, so give yourself plenty of time to get there.

While you’re in the area, visit another Arizona oddity: Arizona Hot Springs, AKA Ringbolt Hot Springs. Beware, though, it’s a challenging 5-mile hike through open desert and a slot canyon.

Salt River Kayaking Day Trip, Arizona

By Kate of Kate Roams the World

Salt River – Photo by Kate Roams the World

A kayaking trip down the Salt River near Phoenix, Arizona makes for one of the best kayaking day trips in the USA. The scenery is breathtaking, with cliffs and mountains towering over you as you make your way down the river. Plus, you get a chance to see wild horses! The area is famous for free-roaming horses, and your chances are rather high of catching a glimpse of a few. You can also see great blue herons, sea otters, and more wildlife.

Beginner kayakers will enjoy this kayaking day trip since most of the float is leisurely, though there are a few swift water parts that can be tricky. Some paddlers tip their kayak during the swift water parts, so bring a dry bag and don’t bring anything too valuable just in case!

The Lower Salt River spans about 12 miles that you can kayak. As this is a one-way kayak trip, have a ride secured back to your original departure spot when you’re finished.

You can book a day trip with kayak rental and shuttle included that starts at Phon D Sutton Recreation Site. This trip will take about 2 hours. In the summer season, more of the river is open to kayaking. You can start at Saguaro Lake Ranch to marvel at the beauty of the upper river.

After kayaking the Salt River, check out nearby Saguaro Lake. Relax on the shores of the lake, do a little hike, or take a boat tour, and enjoy a great sunset!

Horseshoe Bend Kayaking Day Trip, Arizona

By Me of Outdoor Adventure Sampler

Horseshoe Bend kayaking – Photo by Outdoor Adventure Sampler

Hundreds of visitors a day see Horseshoe Bend from the canyon rim. However, very few people have the adventure of a kayaking day trip around Horseshoe Bend on the Colorado River.

The 10-mile kayak paddle trip is between the Glen Canyon Dam and Lees Ferry. You use a backhaul boat service to transport you and the kayaks upriver to the put-in. Several backhaul companies rent kayaks and brief you on the trip. They drop you off at Petroglyph Beach and you paddle back to the Lees Ferry Beach take-out.

The gentle current on the Colorado helps out with the paddling downstream so you can float to enjoy the scenery. Red canyons reflect in the emerald green water. Look for eagles, osprey, and vultures soaring above the river. You may also see wild horses, or, as I did, a mountain lion drinking from the river.

The 5-6 hour kayaking day trip is suitable for beginners and youngsters. There are beautiful beaches to explore and petroglyph panels to discover. Make sure to look up when you kayak around Horseshoe Bend. You’ll see hundreds of dots of people on the rim while you have your quiet wilderness experience. When you finish the trip, visit the Horseshoe Bend rim to see where you just kayaked.

Grand Lake, Colorado is an exceptional destination for kayakers looking for a peaceful escape into nature. Previously known as Spirit Lake, Grand Lake is Colorado’s deepest and largest natural lake. Kayakers have a unique opportunity to paddle amidst breathtaking mountain views on Grand Lake and Shadow Mountain Reservoir. Connected by a canal, they provide a combined 12 miles of shoreline. Grand Lake is an ideal spot for beginners and more seasoned paddlers looking for a scenic adventure.

The tranquil waters are ideal for wildlife viewing, including frequent sightings of moose, mule deer, and occasional elk and bear. One of the best spots to see moose is near the Hilltop boating site. Osprey and bald eagles frequent both lakes, taking advantage of human-made nesting platforms.

The town of Grand Lake has a boardwalk on the main street with cute shops and restaurants to explore. It is adjacent to the west entrance of Rocky Mountain National Park, which offers opportunities for hiking, photography, and wildlife viewing. The closest trails in the park are Adams Falls and the East Inlet Trail. They both start from the east end of Grand Lake.

Whether you are an experienced kayaker or just starting out, Grand Lake’s phenomenal scenery, flat waters, and wildlife will make for a truly memorable kayaking experience. With so many activities besides kayaking, it’s easy to have a perfect Grand Lake day trip.

By Lisa of Planning Away

Lake Tahoe, a fantastic vacation spot during the summer, is located in both California and Nevada. There are fabulous resorts, amazing hikes, and one of the most beautiful lakes in the country. It is one of the best places for kayak day trips in the USA. It is an absolutely gorgeous area to explore.

The water at Lake Tahoe is crystal clear with a backdrop of beautiful mountains surrounding the lake. The best place to launch a kayak is at Sand Harbor Beach. Sand Harbor has a beautiful beach and picnic area to enjoy after your kayaking trip. In fact, this area is so pretty, it is a popular place to get married.

You can rent regular kayaks and glass bottom kayaks at Sand Harbor. The kayak rentals are per hour, so this probably won’t be a long kayaking trip across the lake. Lake Tahoe is so big that lifeguards have to monitor swell levels. There are certain areas where kayaking is allowed or not allowed depending on the weather.

The area is great for all kayaking abilities. If you have children, you can get a two or three-person kayak and take them out on the beautiful waters. For a special evening on the lake, try the Lake Tahoe sunset kayaking tour. Overall, Lake Tahoe is a terrific location for a kayaking adventure.

Lake McDonald Kayaking Day Trip, Montana

By Jess of Uprooted Traveler

Glacier National Park in Montana is renowned for its sweeping mountainscapes, abundant wildlife, and countless alpine lakes. The largest lake in the park is Lake McDonald, a fjord-like body of water, that offers excellent kayaking adventures. The lake is nestled in a bowl of towering mountains and stretches a whopping 10 miles long.

Located on the west side of the park, Lake McDonald tends to be calmer than other large lakes in Glacier and is suitable for even beginner kayakers. Plus, between the technicolor rocks that line the lake’s floor and the surrounding snow-capped Rocky Mountains, Lake McDonald’s waters offer some of the best views in the park.

Paddlers are free to choose-their-own-adventure on the lake. For example, it’s popular for kayakers to paddle along the perimeter of the lake for a better chance to spot wildlife. You can also find spots to bring the kayak ashore to explore trails such as the Lake McDonald West Shore Trail. Alternatively, you can rent a kayak from Glacier Park Boat Company at the Apgar Campground, near the southern shore of the lake. From there, paddle to Lake McDonald Lodge near its northern tip, and ride the park’s shuttle back to where you started. This 5-mile route can take anywhere from two and a half to five hours to complete.

Of course, once you’re done exploring Lake McDonald, Glacier offers countless other adventures. You can enjoy driving the Going-to-the-Sun Road (frequently described as America’s most scenic road!), multi-day backpacking adventures, or exploring historic towns.

Bear Glacier Lagoon is undoubtedly one of the best kayaking day trips in the USA that deserves a top spot on your Alaska itinerary. It is nestled within Kenai Fjords National Park in Alaska’s backcountry. The pristine lagoon offers a surreal landscape of icebergs as big as buildings. Accessible by boat or helicopter from the nearby town of Seward, the journey is part of the thrill, offering spectacular aerial views of the Harding Icefield, along with sightings of majestic mountain goats and possibly bears. Additionally, the view from the air provides a unique vantage point to observe 90 percent of the icebergs unseen from the waterline.

Once at the landing, a 2-hour kayaking expedition awaits, providing an intimate encounter with the colossal icebergs. Clad in a dry suit, participants paddle through the tranquil waters, marveling at the sheer beauty of the surroundings. The experience is enhanced by the presence of seals and sea lions, the echoing cracks of icebergs, and the captivating silence of this remote wilderness.

Kealakekua Bay Kayaking Day Trip, Hawaii

by Katie and Tom of Trekking the Dream

Kealakekua Bay – Photo by Trekking the Dream

Kealakekua on Hawaii’s ‘Big Island’ is perhaps best known for the Captain Cook monument standing in its sheltered bay. There is, however, another reason you may want to add it to your list of ‘must-visit’ destinations. As a designated marine conservation district, its warm, crystal-clear waters teem with exotic fish swimming amongst the colorful corals, making it the perfect spot to discover by kayak.

Kealakekua Bay is easily reached from either Kailua-Kona or Manini Beach, and while you can hire a kayak, taking a kayak tour is highly recommended. The paddle is not arduous, and the water is usually very calm, but a guide will ensure you get the most from your time. They’ll point out the best locations to explore and tell you about the area’s rich history while providing extra safety.

Most tours last around 3 hours and include snorkeling equipment. You can leave your kayak on the beach near the monument while you experience the underwater wonderland. Green turtles and spinner dolphins are regularly seen in the bay, and while you cannot approach them, it is not unusual for them to swim right under you.

The tours are generally suitable for anyone of reasonable fitness who can swim. Some companies specify a minimum age of 13 and a maximum of 65, but this may be negotiable. The trip across to the bay takes between 20-30 minutes depending on your departure point and how fast you paddle. Most companies don’t require any previous kayaking experience.

Secret Falls Kayaking Day Trip, Kauai

By Samantha of Find Love and Travel

Secret Falls – Photo by Peter Vekinis

Secret Falls (Uluwehi Falls) is one of the most scenic waterfalls in Kauai, Hawaii but there is a catch to getting there. The only access is by water, making it a perfect kayaking experience.

The kayak paddle is around 45 minutes, and the hike is around 20 minutes. You will kayak down the Wailua River and take an easy hike through the beautiful jungle. This may seem like a long time, but it goes pretty quickly. The rainforest scenery throughout the entire trip is breathtaking, making it an excellent addition to your Kauai itinerary.

There are no signs leading up to the waterfall, so most people opt to take a guided tour. The Wailua River and Secret Falls kayak and hiking tour will take you on a marvelous adventure to Secret Falls. The guide will point out local wildlife and share about Hawaiian history and legends.

The trip is a great group or couples activity. The entire trip is suitable for beginners, however, there are a few ways to prepare. Remember to bring easy dry clothing, a waterproof phone case, and bug spray.

The highlight of this kayaking trip is the lush tropical scenery. Once you reach Secret Falls, you can enjoy a dip in the water or have a picnic. Keep in mind that swimming under the waterfall is not recommended, and you do so at your own risk. Overall, it’s a fantastic kayaking journey to enjoy when visiting Kauai.

Three Sisters Springs Kayaking Day Trip in Florida

Three Sisters Springs – Photo by Where in the World is Nina

Three Sisters Springs in Crystal River, Florida, is a fantastic spot for kayaking because of its clear waters, scenic beauty, and cool wildlife.

It’s a place where you can paddle around in a kayak and see nature up close. Look for dolphins, birds, fish, and even manatees! The springs, named Pretty Sister, Deep Sister, and Little Sister, offer stunning underwater views.  Kayaking is only permitted from April 1 to November 14 to prevent disturbing the wintering manatees.

A trip length of a few hours is just enough time to soak in the sights and enjoy the area’s peacefulness. Of course, you can visit for more or less, depending on your abilities and the weather. If there is wind, make sure to plan for a longer trip and a decent arm workout!

Starting from Kings Bay Park or Hunter Springs Park, paddlers can head south to find the springs on their left, enjoying the journey as much as the springs themselves.

This adventure is perfect for pretty much anyone—no need to be a kayaking pro.

Three Sisters is great, but the area is packed with way more, including over 70 springs that feed into Kings Bay. Explore Hunter Springs with its crystal-clear waters and spring-fed beach, and hidden gems such as Jurassic Spring and Little Hidden Spring.

You can kayak Three Sister Springs on a tour or just rent a kayak and hop in and explore yourself! Try a clear kayak tour to see manatees in their natural habitat.

Don’t miss a chance to swim the manatees in the Crystal River springs. Seeing these gentle giants up close is exhilarating.

Everglades Kayaking Day Trip, Florida

by Lori of Travlinmad

If you love kayaking wherever you travel, then plan a trip to southwest Florida. Kayaking is one of the best ways to experience the Florida Everglades. It’s hard to beat the endless paddling possibilities among the variety of ecosystems and unique trails, from wetlands and hardwood hammocks to cypress swamps and marshy grasslands.

The western Everglades are ideal to paddle where cypress swamps and mangrove tunnels provide an other-worldly setting to paddle through, and welcome shade from the hot sun.

One of the best reasons to go kayaking in the Everglades is the incredible wildlife and scenery you’ll only find in this sub-tropical wilderness. Bird watchers will find lots to see from migrating birds such as egrets, wood storks, herons, and osprey, to year-round species such as roseate spoonbills, barred owls, and white ibises.

Then there are the Everglades’ most famous animals — alligators. You’re likely to see some sunning themselves along the shore or under a mangrove, but they usually keep a safe distance from you.

There are several spots to put in along Tamiami Trail in Big Cypress Preserve if you want to paddle on your own. You can rent kayaks from several local companies that will deliver kayaks to wherever you are. This is ideal for those with limited kayaking experience.

To go further out along some of the more extensive trails in the Everglades, a guided kayak tour is recommended. An experienced guide will take you safely to their favorite spots, be able to navigate back to your starting point, and point out interesting things to see along the way.

by Anna of Struck on the Go

Kayaking through the mangrove lagoon in St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands as you watch for stingrays below and unique birds above is an amazing experience.

The guided Kayak, Hike, & Snorkel Tour with VI Ecotours is one of the best St. Thomas excursions that you can take but it’s also the longest tour they offer so you should be reasonably fit. For a shorter tour, you might enjoy the 2.5-hour kayak and snorkel tour. Conversely, kayaking at night through the mangroves in a clear kayak with lights might be your thing.

For the longer trip, you start by kayaking through stingray alley and the mangrove lagoon until you reach a rocky outcropping, where you get out and admire some tide pools and a blowhole. Next, you paddle over to Cas Cay, where you eat lunch and take a short hike. Then you snorkel among the mangroves, where marine life loves to hang out. Schools of fish, lobster, sea urchins, and stingrays may be seen here.

The crystal clear water allows you to see fish and other sea creatures perfectly. You’ll also get gorgeous views of the rocky coastline. Finally, you will learn so much about the plants and animals that call this area home from your guide.

This tour lasts for 5 hours. While you will paddle a little less than 2 miles, the ocean breeze can definitely affect how tired you get. No kayaking experience is necessary as the guide gives you instructions as needed.

Winding through Chattanooga, you’ll find the Tennessee River, which makes for a lovely place to kayak. The river is calm so that even beginner-level kayakers can enjoy their day trip.

Specifically, most day trips to kayak the Tennessee River are most easily accessible from Coolidge Park where there is an outdoor center, called Outdoor Chattanooga, with rentals and guided tours.

What better way to experience one of the top canyons in the Southwest than a kayaking day trip through Santa Elena Canyon? This massive gorge has been carved through the heart of Big Bend National Park by the mighty Rio Grande River. Therefore, its towering 1,500-foot walls provide an unforgettable backdrop for this iconic river trip.

Santa Elena Canyon is an excellent place to kayak, as it is suitable for both beginners and novices. Additionally, those looking for day trips or longer overnight or multi-day trips will find the right route. It is a diverse area to kayak in, offering something that suits every boater’s preferences.

One of the most popular kayaking day trips starts at the mouth of Santa Elena Canyon. From here, the route proceeds upstream several miles into the canyon, before returning to complete a “boomerang” half-day trip. This portion of the river contains lower flow rates and technicality, making it quite a leisurely day trip. While you can self-launch in Santa Elena Canyon, many guided tours, operating out of nearby Terlingua, handle all the gear, food, instruction, and permits required.

It is possible to complete longer day trips or overnight and multi-day trips on the Rio Grande, as well as launch further west down the river where rapids are a higher class with more technicality.

When not kayaking, the surrounding region offers additional outdoor adventures, like hiking the mountainous summit of the Lost Mine Trail, enjoying natural hot springs, or viewing the unique “window” formation on the Window Trail.

Pictured Rocks Kayaking Day Trip on Lake Superior

Lake Superior is one of the largest freshwater lakes in the world. Kayaking in Lake Superior near Pictured Rocks offers kayakers the opportunity to experience the lake’s dramatic natural beauty. The turquoise and emerald green waters, coupled with the rugged shoreline, provide the perfect backdrop for an unforgettable kayaking excursion. The rugged shoreline has towering sandstone cliffs streaked with a kaleidoscope of colors. Kayaking is one of the best ways to view them up close.

During the kayaking adventure, you can navigate through sea caves, arches, and rock formations carved by centuries of natural forces. Lake Superior is known for its rough waters. Because of that, all kayaking companies use sea kayaks, and it’s not advised for people to kayak solo. It’s best to have some kayaking experience before heading out on Lake Superior. You could also go with someone who is experienced.

Depending on where you explore, your kayaking adventure can take as little as two hours to over six hours. If you plan to stay out most of the day, pack sunscreen, water, and snacks in a dry bag. Additionally, let someone else know where you’re going.

Apostle Islands Kayaking Day Trip on Lake Superior, Wisconsin

By Susan of This Big Wild World

Apostle Islands – Photo by This Big Wild World

Along the south shore of Lake Superior is an amazing kayaking area within the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. The unique and often unpredictable weather patterns of Lake Superior have eroded the sandstone cliffs on the south shore and formed sea caves that are only accessible by water.

The area is home to 22 islands over more than 500 square miles of Lake Superior. There are endless opportunities for day and multi-day trips to kayak the Apostle Islands sea caves. However, unless you are an experienced kayaker, it’s best to book a tour with a guide as the conditions can be unpredictable and challenging.

There are several outfitters that offer guided half and full-day kayaking experiences for most skill levels. While not required, it is recommended to have at least some kayaking experience due to the safety risks. When selecting a tour company, the primary considerations are the quality and experience of the guides, their commitment to safety, and location. A few to consider are Lost Creek Adventures, Trek & Trail, and Adventure Vacations.

While you’re in the area, spend some time exploring the nearby town of Bayfield and take the ferry out to Madeline Island for the day.

The Red River Gorge Underground Kayaking Day Trip, Kentucky

Gorge Underground – Photo by Where the Wild Kids Wander

One of the coolest kayaking day trips in the US is at an abandoned mine in Kentucky. The Gorge Underground, in the Red River Gorge region of Kentucky, offers guided and unguided kayaking tours through an old mine that flooded in the 1980s.

Guests can kayak in a typical boat or float along the waters in a crystal kayak with LED lights. Children as young as 5 can participate but must sit in a tandem kayak with an adult if they are under 9 years old. Since the waters inside the cave are calm, this is an excellent activity for anyone, even if you’ve never kayaked before.

Guided tours last 1-1.5 hours, depending on your chosen tour. The tour covers almost 5 miles of tunnels through the old mine. Your small group (up to 12 people) will learn about the history of the mine. You will also discover some unique features found in the mine, including the water source responsible for flooding the mine and some old equipment left behind. In the water, you’ll see rainbow trout. They are the only fish that can survive the water’s cold temperature.

They offer two-hour slots for unguided tours if you’d prefer to explore the mine independently.

To prepare for your paddle through an old mine, you’ll want to dress warmly, as the temperature is 52°F year-round, and the water is 40°F. Shoes are not allowed on the crystal kayaks. You can rent neoprene socks or bring your own. Gloves are also good to wear to keep your hands warm. You’ll be provided a helmet, headlamp, and personal floatation.

The tranquil waters of Frenchmen Bay in Maine are a gorgeous place for kayaking day trips. The bay is between Mount Desert Island, home to Acadia National Park, and Winter Harbor on the Schoodic Peninsula. On the paddle, you will see abundant wildlife, rugged cliffs, and picturesque islands draped in lush greenery. Thanks to the thick fog and generous rain that frequent this coast, the green offers a striking contrast to the deep blue waters.

For experienced sea kayak paddlers, rent a kayak from an outfitter in Bar Harbor and explore the bay unguided. For less experienced paddlers, join a guided tour with a company such as Coastal Kayaking. Skilled guides will educate you on paddle technique, point out easy-to-miss wildlife, take you through hidden coves, and share about the history and ecology of the bay.

For families with children between the ages of 8 and 12, join Coastal Kayaking’s 2.5-hour Harbor Tour. You will put in at Bar Harbor and circle the Porcupine Islands. Guides will teach you how to paddle and point out wildlife. You can see bald eagles, harbor seals, and porpoises as you navigate the bay at a family-friendly pace.

However, visitors with older or no kids can spend more time on the water. Join a half-day tour for ages 12+, which covers up to five miles of coastline and includes a stop on an island. Or you can book a private guide, designing your ideal excursion to immerse yourself in the spectacular beauty of Frenchman Bay.

Boston Harbor Island Kayaking Day Trip, Massachusetts

Boston is absolutely brimming with historical sites, but few tourists or even locals realize how much more history is sitting just a few miles offshore, on the Boston Harbor Islands. Overlooking the busy shipping lanes are Revolutionary War-era forts and lighthouses, gun emplacements from World War II, and a former landfill-turned-verdant parkland. Plus the Harbor offers unique views of the Boston skyline. Public ferries run to a few of the islands, but many more islands can be accessed by kayak.

With 34 islands, the possible routes for kayaking the Boston Harbor Islands are endless. However, most day trips require 3-4 hours of paddling. Kayakers usually start at Carson Beach in South Boston for easy access to Spectacle Island. It’s about three miles out and takes 1-1.5 hours. Putting in at Deer Island (which is actually a peninsula) or Hull is a better option for seeing sights in the Outer Harbor, such as Georges Island (home to Fort Warren), Little Brewster Island (the Boston Lighthouse), or Peddocks Island (Fort Andrews).

Kayaking the Harbor is a great way to get out on the water without leaving Boston, however, some risks are involved. There’s significant open water between each of the islands, so a solid method of self-rescue is a necessity. Since cell service is limited, carrying a VHF radio isn’t a bad idea. In addition, paddling with a partner is strongly encouraged.

Smith Island in Maryland is one of the most underrated destinations for kayaking day trips in the USA. The island has an extensive network of protected waterways and marked trails weaving through 8,000 acres of marshland. It is a picturesque setting that is perfect for exploring by kayak.

Paddlers can immerse themselves in the serene landscapes, taking in the breathtaking views of the Chesapeake Bay dotted with tall marsh grasses and bordered by quaint fishing villages.  Due to its central location in the Chesapeake and its proximity to the Martin National Wildlife Refuge, the area is teeming with wildlife. While kayaking, you may encounter herons, ospreys, and eagles, in addition to crabs and schools of fish.

The duration and distance of a kayaking trip around Smith Island can vary depending on the route chosen. Typically, kayakers of any experience level can enjoy a leisurely day trip exploring the waterways at their own pace. It is important to be mindful of the tides as low water levels may affect your ability to traverse the waterways.

Beyond kayaking, there are many other exciting things to do on Smith Island. Visitors can explore the island’s historic fishing villages by golf cart, join an early morning crabbing expedition, and try the official dessert of Maryland, the Smith Island Cake. The local culture, characterized by the unique dialect spoken by residents, adds an extra layer of authenticity to the experience. Smith Island, Maryland is a kayaking adventure not to be missed.
