The stunning white village of Ronda in the Andalusia region of Spain is the perfect base for a biking holiday. We spent a wonderful week in Ronda on a family vacation e-biking in and around Ronda. For 3 full days, I biked the hills around Ronda, gliding through olive groves, winding through historic white villages, and marveling at the mountain scenery. E-biking in the Ronda area is the perfect way to see the natural, cultural, and historic wonders of the region.

Best Time for E-Biking in Ronda

Spring (March-June) and Fall (September-November) offer the most comfortable temperatures and reliable weather for biking.

The summer can be oppressively hot, especially midday. If you want to cycle in the summer, go early in the morning or in the evenings. Winter is cooler with shorter days. I biked in Ronda in January with some chilly temperatures. The gift of sunny days made cycling enjoyable except on the coldest days. Be aware that some cycle shops close down in the winter.

Cycling Company in Ronda

The bike company Cycleronda in the heart of Ronda offers the perfect bike rental, whether you are a dedicated road warrior, a mountain biking fanatic, or a leisurely touring cyclist. The owner, Ferry, has several decades of bike shop experience, and it shows in the quality of his bikes and his knowledge about cycling in the area. Cycleronda was the only bike shop I found in the area open in the winter.

Ferry offers curated cycling routes that take you riding through the gorgeous landscapes of Andalusia. He provides GPX files to use on a cycling app. He also has charted routes on a paper map, that you can photograph to use.

The equipment at Cycleronda is top of the line. The company offers high-end road bikes, hybrid bikes for leisurely biking, and e-bikes. With the many steep hills in and around Ronda, I was very happy on an e-bike. The Cube One e-bikes are beefy with loads of power to climb the steepest hills. Plus, the battery life on the e-bikes easily covered the longest routes. The e-bikes came with a pump and spare tube, bike charger, pannier, and lock. The rental helmet is a few bucks more.

Best Places for E-Biking in Ronda

Certainly, the highlight of this area of Andulusia are the white villages nestled in valleys or clinging to the hillsides. We did several marvelous bike rides to white villages to immerse in the historic charm and to sample some delicious local foods and wines.

E-Biking to Arriate from Ronda

Descending through Arriate

One of our favorites was a 26 km loop to the white village of Arriate. The route started by swooping down farm roads past olive groves and persimmon trees, while framed by the mountains on both sides. We arrived to confetti-filled streets after the Three Kings Day parade. We ducked into a local restaurant with the crowds for a festive meal. On the return trip, we were pleased by the powerful e-bike motors. The steep ascent back to Ronda was a breeze as we enjoyed the old farm roads and fields.

E-Biking to Setenil de las Bodegas from Ronda

Cycling into Setenil de las Bodegas

Our next white village adventure was to Setenil de las Bodegas. The pueblo’s whitewashed houses are built into the surrounding cliffs. The main street of charming restaurants and shops is built under a rock overhang. It feels as if you are in a cave while you enjoy your patio meal.

We did a loop through Arriate to Setenil and then returned to Ronda through the olive and almond groves near the blue, hazy, distant mountains. Stone farmhouses (cortijos), grazing sheep, and small vineyards punctuate the countryside, while cork oaks and holm oaks dot the hillsides between cultivated fields. Wild rosemary, thyme, and lavender grow along the low stone walls. Nearby Setenil, the limestone famous in the town begins to emerge along the road.

The bike ride to Setenil is about 20 km one way from Ronda and took us about an hour. The rest of the family drove over by car for a lovely dinner at Tugasa El Almendral Restaurant.

Biking the Vía Verde de la Sierra

bike surrounded by black olives

The Vía Verde de la Sierra is a converted railway line that travels between Olvera and Puerto Serrano for about 36 km through beautiful Andalusian countryside. Because it follows an old train route, the surface is wide, smooth, and mostly flat to gently downhill, making it ideal for relaxed cycling. You will pass through about 30 tunnels of varying length, cross 4 viaducts, and ride past historic train stations, some of which have been converted into cafes.

I’m a big fan of the Via Verde routes in Spain, having completed multiday cycling trips on the Val del Zafán Greenway and the Ojos Negros Greenway. I had planned a family day trip on the Via Verde de la Sierra that was unfortunately cancelled. However, I highly recommend the trail that starts about 1 hour’s drive from Ronda.

Bike rentals are available at several points along the trail. Cronosesca rentals are located at the rail station at the start of the trail in Olvera. They have regular bikes, e-bikes, and children’s bikes and buggies. You can also rent at Coripe Station with Alquiler De Bicicletas en Coripe or Irripo Bikes.

If you aren’t into a DIY adventure, cycle on a guided day trip on the Via Verde de la Sierra with transportation from Ronda. However you do it, just don’t miss this family-friendly cycling adventure.

E-Biking to an Olive Oil Mill and Museum from Ronda

Views of olive groves at LA Almazara

I learned a new word on this trip–oleotourism. Similar to wine tourism, oleotourism is an immersive experience for exploring, tasting, and understanding the production of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) directly at the source.

We combined cycling with oleotourism for a marvelous adventure to LA Almazara – LA Organic OliveOil Mill and Museum. It’s a short bike ride from Ronda through the olive groves. The building is an artistic masterpiece designed by French architect Philippe Starck. On the outside, a huge bull’s horn protrudes from the sandstone building, a nod to the local bull-fighting culture. Other massive art pieces can be found on the property, giving you the feeling of visiting an art museum as well as an olive oil mill.

The museum tells a fascinating story about the history and present of olive oil production. An audio guide will lead you through the exhibits. Conversely, you can book a guided tour of LA Almazara.

The olive oil tasting experience offers some of the popular LA Almazara olive oils to sample. You warm the small cup of oil in your hand to tease out the richest flavors. With the panniers supplied by Cycloronda, it’s easy to slip a few bottles of the best extra-virgin olive oil into them as a perfect souvenir.

You can combine a stop at LA Almazara into a longer e-bike loop ride to Arriate or Setinil de las Bodegas.

Logistics of E-Biking in Ronda

Ronda is the perfect base for family-friendly cycling day trips. Even exploring the streets of the white village by bicycle is an adventure. The nooks and crannies of the city and the outskirts are delightful to discover by bike.

Accommodations in Ronda

Apartamento Sofia in the center of Ronda is a 3 bedroom/2 bath apartment that comfortably fits a family. The spacious accommodation is located on a pedestrian street close to all the sites, restaurants, and shops. Walking through the village every morning for a traditional churro and coffee is easy from this apartment.

Alameda del Tajois is also in the center of Ronda, offering amazing views of the village, and an easy walk to the famous gorge and bridge. The spacious 3 bedroom/2 bath has plenty of room for the family and dedicated parking. Some of the best restaurants are right out the door.

Wrap Up of E-Biking in Ronda

The Ronda area of Andalusia is an ideal destination for world-class cycling. With e-bikes, you can enjoy family-friendly routes for everyone in your party. The e-bikes make the hilly terrain a breeze to navigate so that you can concentrate on the stunning scenery and visits to the area’s famous white villages.

Check in with Ferry at Cycleronda for excellent advice on cycling the area and for the top-notch e-bikes they rent. Some of the bike app routes go on the main road, however we were able to use Google maps to find quieter alternatives. That said, Spanish drivers are very respectful and considerate of cyclists, so even on the busy road, they will slow down and give you a wide berth.

In addition to biking, you may also want to explore other outdoor adventures in the area. I highly recommend the Caminito del Rey hike nearby. I explored the breathtaking gorge via the trail securely attached to the steep limestone walls. The guided tour offered the unique history of the King’s Little Path and the flora and fauna along the way. The hiking isn’t hard; it’s mostly flat. However, it’s super exciting to be so high above the narrow gorge.

E-biking would definitely make it easier navigating the steep hills in the white villages. I haven’t been on one yet, but the trip sounds amazing. Being as I travel solo, I like that you can also do an e-bike tour.

Never tried e-biking before, it looks like so much fun! And a great alternative to traditional biking (those steep hills – yikes!)

It’s interesting that E-Biking has become popular in Ronda and surrounds! It must be fun riding through the hills around the white villages and zipping through the car traffic in Ronda. Thanks for all the tips and information.

What a fantastic way to see a new place! I’ve never thought about doing an ebike tour before but I’m going to look it up now.
